Judging from the difficulties with using wind energy at peak times, and rather inefficient storage of the off-peak wind energy described in the article, I would say oil empires’ dreams are safe for now, at least as far as this alternative power source is concerned.
You are right, TODAY. But in not too distant future there will be a price, a heavy one, put on carbon emissions due to gree house effect(think about this Xmas in Warsaw, snow is gone, or about panic in Alps, many slopes are green. Wind is free, bigger generator are being built, network is optimnized for bigger areas. Wind, sun and most importantly human ability to innovate will soon (I define soon as < 20 years) eliminate our dependence on oil. Of course between now and then the barrel of oil could cost 200 dollars. Oil empires should use this oil revenues wisely, it will be their last.
